Mr. Sheng-Wu Lin, the bamboo charcoal expert, has been cooperating with the Department of Wood Industry of Pingtung University of Science and Technology since the 921 earthquake in an effort to turn unremarkable bamboo into indispensable household products. Mr. Lin insists on using top quality moso bamboo from Lugu as the raw material for his bamboo charcoal. He utilizes traditional kiln firing technologies for the manufacture of top quality bamboo charcoal. Temperature control during the manufacturing process requires carefully honed techniques to guarantee optimal results in the field of bamboo charcoal quality and production safety.

Unique characteristics of Moso Bamboo Charcoal
Upon a kiln firing process at close to 1000°C, the charcoal turns into a semi-permanent alkaline material that contains multiple minerals such as iron, potassium, and calcium. It can be used multiple times within a specified time limit. In addition to its multiple known functions, new effects are constantly discovered through technological and scientific research. Charcoal is utilized in many different areas including food, clothing, housing, travel, education, and recreation. Scientific evidence in Taiwan proves that the porosity of bamboo is superior to all other plants and that the multi-fiber characteristics of high-altitude moso bamboo grown in Nantou are superior to those of other charcoal products. Moso bamboo found at a high altitude of around 1000m is utilized as the raw material for the manufacture of Wuxiu bamboo charcoal. The charcoal is produced by adopting a high-temperature refinement and firing (non-mechanical) process at close to 1000°C in a traditional kiln. The end product contains multiple natural minerals needed by the human body and has numerous positive effects.

The positive effects of Binchotan are widely recognized and acclaimed in Japan. Taiwan is also gradually acquiring relevant research and manufacturing techniques. However, the production of bamboo charcoal whose appearance is very similar to Binchotan is not as simple as it seems. Not every business possesses the required kiln firing technologies. The production of high quality Wuxiu Moso Bamboo Charcoal materials and products relies on the ownership of a plot of 10 hectares in the Moso Bamboo Forest, joint guidance by the Council of Agriculture, Nantou County Government, Lugu Forest Protection Association, Lugu Township Office, and the first farm resort production and marketing group of Lugu Farmers' Association, the adoption of R&D technologies developed by Pingtung University of Science and Technology, and a constant refinement of traditional manual kiln construction and firing technologies.  The manufacturer embraces the same Japanese spirit of advanced R&D in the pursuit of high efficacy and high quality products
